How to Prepare for a Roof Replacement
Nov 24, 2022Your roof replacement is scheduled, but you aren’t sure how to get things in order prior to the project. This is a common concern homeowners have, and understandably so. A roof replacement leads to a lot of noise and mess, and you want to be prepared. Getting ready for a roof replacement is simple—just consider the following:
Protect Items in Your Attic
The attic is commonly used as a storage space for boxes, furniture, and other miscellaneous items. And though this is a great space to keep things out of the way, the combination of workers moving around and hammering on your roof can vibrate your rafters, resulting in a flurry of dust falling on your things. Considering this, removing your belongings from the attic or covering them with a sheet or tarp is always a good idea.
Secure Your Valuables
The pounding of a roof replacement can create a ruckus that doesn’t bode well for breakables. If you have art, mirrors, chandeliers, or other fragile valuables hanging around your home, consider temporarily removing these pieces for safekeeping.
Remove Your Vehicles Out of the Driveway
During a roof replacement, debris may fall from your roof and onto the ground. This can be stressful if your car remains in the driveway, as you’ll have to worry about falling items landing on your vehicle. And, if loose nails are scattered about prior to cleanup, you run the risk of a flat tire when navigating the driveway.
Relocate Outdoor Items
Similar to your car, outdoor items such as potted plants, patio furniture, and bikes should be stored or moved away from your roofline. Anything that remains around the perimeter of your home may be in the way of falling debris.
Take Children and Pets into Account
The continuous pounding of a roof replacement can be overwhelming for children and pets. With this in mind, arrange for a pet sitter or a playdate, as this will help prevent your children or pets from feeling stressed by the noise of a roofing project.
